2023年12月12日、ミュージカルの名匠リチャード・ロジャースとオスカー・ハマースタインの提携80周年を記念して、米英トップのミュージカルスター10人が集うコンサートがロンドンのロイヤル・ドルリー・レーン劇場で開催されました。当初は一夜限りのコンサートでしたが、好評のため同日のマチネを追加。2.30pm と 7.30pm の2回公演でした。
このコンサートは撮影されて153分の映画になり、イギリスとアイルランドの映画館で2024年2月14日と18日に上映、北米地域には3月24日〜3月31日にストリーミングされましたが、地域制限が厳しく日本からは見ることができませんでした😢。5月31日にはCD発売と音楽配信、同じ日に米PBSで短縮版が放送予定です。

アーロンの最初の歌は、ミュージカル『回転木馬』のSoliloquy（独白）のラストの１節。
歌詞を調べたら、これは、妻のジュリーから妊娠を打ち明けられたビリーが「息子が生まれたら俺が仕込んでやろう、でも娘が生まれたら…何不自由なく育ててやらねば！それには金が要る！奪ってでも手に入れてやる！」と、どんどん突っ走っていく歌のラストの部分でした。こんなにかっこいいのに残念すぎる🤣！いや、本人は本気で心から妻と生まれてくる子を愛しているのですよね。

ミュージカル『南太平洋』からYou’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught。なぜ楽しげな美しいメロディの曲をこんなに厳しい表情で歌っているのかと思って調べてみました。
彼は特別な任務を帯びて南の島にやってきたジョセフ（ジョー）・ケーブル中尉。島の娘リアットと恋に落ちるけれど、自らの人種偏見のため結婚には躊躇してしまう。もう1組のカップルは女性が偏見を捨てられず、男性の元を去ろうとしている。それを見て、偏見は人間が生まれつき持っているわけではない、幼い頃から周到に吹き込まれたものなんだ、と苦悩する歌のようです。物語では彼自身は偏見を克服できないまま旅立ってしまいます。歌い終わった後のアーロンの陰のある風情がそれを暗示させていていいですね。
このミュージカルが作られた1940年代はまだ人種差別が合法だった時代で、この歌は相当な物議をかもしたそうです。しかしこの歌を入れなければ上演はしないとロジャースとハマースタインは断固として譲らなかったのだとか。

Broadway superstar Aaron Tveit gave West End audiences a rare opportunity to experience his inimitable vocals live. While there was no opportunity for a ‘Roxanne’ opt-up, he proved why he is one of the best in the business with stunning performances of ‘You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught’, ‘Younger Than Springtime’, a beautiful ‘Ten Minutes Ago’ and an incredible albeit far too short ‘Soliloquy’.
ブロードウェイのスーパースター、アーロン・トヴェイトは、ウエストエンドの観客に彼の比類のないボーカルを生で体験する貴重な機会を与えました。 「ロクサーヌ」のオプトアップの機会はありませんでしたが、彼は、「You’ve Got To Be Careively Taught」、「Younger Than Springtime」、美しい「Ten Minutes Ago」、そして短すぎるとはいえ驚くべき「Soliloquy」の見事なパフォーマンスで、なぜ自分がこの業界で最高の一人なのかを証明しました。
