タイトルでいきなり行き詰まったのですが、「真面目な楽しみ」？「真面目なおかしさ」？「本気で楽しむ」？
Every time Aaron Tveit performs in Schmigadoon! – whether it’s the ditty “You Can’t Tame Me” or the ballad “Enjoy the Ride” – he acts as if he were born carrying a tune. And while he’s really been at it since the school chorus in fourth grade, the star shares the secret to his award-winning gifts: “I don’t take myself too seriously, and I’m not afraid to make a fool out of myself. It’s always served me well.”

That attitude, he adds, helped him land the part of Danny Bailey in the fantastical Apple TV+ comedy series. As the handsome carnival owner in the tuneful town of the show’s title, he instantly woos first-time visitor Melissa (Cecily Strong) with his aw-shucks charm. However, he’s actually a scoundrel in turtleneck-and-high-waisted-trousers clothing. “I quickly learned that my function was to give things for Cecily to react off,” Tveit explains. “So the further I leaned into the character, the better.”

Tveit, familiar face (and voice) to musical fans thanks to showy turns in Les Misérables and Fox’s Grease Live!, took part in Schmigadoon! during his extended pandemic-induced hiatus from Moulin Rouge! on Broadway.

“I put myself on tape because the show sounded interesting,” he says. “Here were these traditional musical tropes bouncing off this very progressive comedy. And this murderer’s row of talent was involved! So, it was an unbelievable happy accident because this would have been a great job during the best of times. The fact that we did it in 2020 is incredible to me.”

A few months after returning to New York City, Tveit won a Tony for Lead Actor in a Musical – the trophy sits on the mantle in his apartment – and happily resumed his rigorous eight-shows-a-week schedule on stage. But he’ll always enjoy his time, not to mention his ride, in Schmigadoon!.
